GitHub MCP Integration

Learn how to integrate GitHub with Cokpit using MCP service

GitHub Credentials

Step 1: Create a Personal Access Token (PAT)

Example: Personal Access Token

  1. Go to GitHub → Settings → Developer settings → Personal access tokens.

  2. Click Generate new token (classic) or Generate new token (fine-grained) depending on needs.

  3. Give your token a descriptive name.

  4. Select scopes/permissions:

    • repo (or contents:read for read-only)
    • workflow (if you need actions access)
  5. Click Generate token.

  6. Copy the token immediately.

💡 Tip: Store the token securely; you won't be able to view it again.

Step 2: Add GitHub Credentials to Cokpit (MCP)

  1. Open Cokpit and go to Integrations → Version Control → GitHub (MCP).
  2. Click Add secret.
  1. Fill in the required fields:
    • Enter a unique Secret Name
    • Paste your Personal Access Token
  2. Click Submit.

Security Best Practices

  • Create tokens with minimal required permissions
  • Use fine-grained tokens when possible
  • Regularly rotate tokens
  • Use separate tokens per service or environment
  • Enable two-factor authentication on GitHub
